Alan Crandall

My name is Alan Crandall. I was exposed to music at a very young age, as a large part of my family   sang and composed.  My early years included learning to play along with my family on  acoustic guitar , tambourine or anything that made a sound. In my home my earliest memories are of  music of every style being on the turntable from morning till evening every day. Those early days of absorbing all those sounds defininately set my foot on a path.I started playing electric  guitar at 13 and although it was my main instrument, also added dobro ,slide, guitar , mandolin, and bass guitar to the list of instruments I became proficient on. I learned to sight read in band at school and pursued an interest in composition and orchestration.

While in Southern Ca. in the 1980`s I completed a music theory program at U.S.C. @ San Diego campus. All the while playing in various cover and original bands in the Los Angeles area. Playing with, opening for and meeting several nationally known musicians. Playing almost every style imaginable including: hard rock, blues, r&b, funk, reggae etc

In the following years I traveled extensively playing around the U.S. I started teaching about 25 years ago.At first teaching friend’s family and then gathering a following of many students through the years. I turned professional as a full time musician about 16 years ago focusing on recording, songwriting and teaching! I am currently finishing a degree program in music composition and will completethat in June of this year.

Throughout my career I`ve worked as session guitarist, sideman, and co-writer to several artists both unknown and a few signed to labels. But by far, aside from any musical education and playing experience I’vegained its teaching that has brought me the most reward! It’s often said that the teacher becomes the student and in my case that’s certainly true. I’ve gained more insight into the pursuit of all avenues in music by having to learn notto just teach a student something, but to really relate to them and convey that music is a language we can all speak!

From beginners to a seasoned players that just can’t seem to get over that barrier in their playing, The single most important thing a teacher has to give is the gift of possibility! And the assurance that no matter what, I`m going to make sure that every student that walks into my room will know that I will strive to make sure that they absolutely know more when they leave ,then when they came through the door! That is my commitment as a teacher and the mark I set for myself every day.

My methods vary depending on the age, the experience, the style of play, and the goals of each individual student. I focus on all the expected things, such as technique, basictheory, music appreciation and ear training! Alsolearning how to play with other people and the ultimate and most important goal, actually playing songs!

My influences are wide and vast but include Eric Clapton ,B.B. King, JimmyPage, FrankZappa,JoePerry, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor Jimi Hendrix  and George Benson ,the list goes on, as well as many modern players as well.Styles include everything from the heavier side  of rock, to country, funk/jazz,r&b ,soul and even hip hop. I`m currently recording  a new disc of fully original compostions  for later this year.

My musical philosophy can be summed up in one  simple phrase: If it sounds good, it is good! Thanks for reading and I can’t wait to meet you!
