Matt J. Covey

Matt Covey began taking percussion lessons at the age of eight. Today he is an accomplished musician, having completed his Bachelor of Music studies in Percussion and Performance at Western Connecticut State University School of Music. There Matt studied percussion with David L. Smith, New Haven Symphony orchestra principal percussionist. While attending school, he was chosen as a solo performer to represent the percussion department during the Music Department's successful bid for accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music.
As an educator, Matt has taught percussion since 1999. He has also instructed the Southington High School Marching Band's “Pit” percussion section from 2002-2004. Matt's extensive performing experience covers the full range of drums and percussion, including snare drum, drum set, mallet percussion, orchestral percussion, and music theory. His proficiency as a performer and teacher extends to all styles of music including Mallets, Orchestral/Symphonic, Marching, Fife & Drum, as well as Latin, Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Blues, R&B/Soul, Hip-hop, Pop, Rock, Punk/Hardcore, Metal, Reggae, and Techno/Dance. Matt loves teaching students of all ages and skill levels. Whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced student, Matt's aim is to help students achieve their goals in the world of percussion. This also includes professional musicians either interested in strengthening weak areas as an all-around percussionist or learning a new instrument. Whatever your needs are as a student, Matt is happy and eager to provide them as your teacher!
Matt has performed professionally since 2000. He currently plays drums for New York-based funk/soul/hip-hop band, The Evolved. Prior to that, Matt has played drums for various rock, punk rock, pop and jazz groups, garnering a lot of recording experience along the way. He has also shared the stage with highly acclaimed bands such as Tower of Power , and Bomb Squad. Matt has had the honor to perform alongside world-renowned jazz musicians like Christian McBride, Bob Berg, Roberto Lumbambo, Chris Parker, and Matt Wilson, as well as famed percussionists Janis Potter, Arthur Lipner, Nebojsa Zivkovic, and Gordon Stout. Matt has also worked as a freelance percussionist performing for several professional and community concert esembles, as well as church groups and parades.
