My name is Steven Buttery and I've been playing drums and percussion since the seventh grade. Coming from a musical family, I was immediately brought into an environment full of lessons and concerts. Throughout school I've been a part of many musical ensembles, with jazz bands, concerts bands, and percussion ensembles.
I've been teaching percussion, with an emphasis on set, for over four years at this point, at home, in various high schools and middle schools, and for other musical organizations. I'm able to teach anything in the percussion field (snare, kit, timpani, mallets, etc) and always pay special attention to sight reading and being able to read rhythms properly.
My experience playing live goes back almost ten years, with various rock and punk groups, where I've taken part in both writing and performing. Playing live is a huge treat to me, as it continues to challenge me in new ways every performance.
At the moment I am a student at Conn College in New London where I am active in multiple ensembles, including a percussion and new music group that frequently premiers new compositions for the percussion world. In addition to this I am active in theory, ethnomusicology, and even electronic music courses.
Playing percussion instruments, and even more broadly, taking part in music has become a central part of life for me, and teaching for the past years has given me brand new perspectives on music in general.
I'm really looking forward to meeting some new promising students!
Thanks!
Steven
